Why Korea's brightest students keep choosing medical school
For years the top band of Korean exam scores has flowed overwhelmingly toward medicine — a rational response to risk and reward that engineering faculties and technology companies describe as a quiet drain on the country's core industries.
Ask Korean teachers where their strongest students go, and the answer has been the same for years: medicine first, then everything else. Admission cut-offs tell the story plainly — medical faculties across the country, including those at provincial universities, have long recruited from a thinner slice of the score distribution than the most celebrated engineering departments in Seoul. Preparatory academies openly market multi-year plans for re-taking the entrance exam until a medical score is reached, and a meaningful share of top-band students do exactly that.
The preference is often lamented as a cultural failing. It is more accurately read as a market signal. A medical licence in Korea offers what almost no other credential does: high, stable income; independence from corporate employment; effective immunity from the early-fifties retirement that shadows office careers; and geographic freedom, since patients exist everywhere. Engineering offers strong starting salaries at the conglomerates, followed by intense hours, uncertain promotion tournaments and careers that often end decades before a doctor’s would.
Researchers who study Korean talent allocation point out that the imbalance is self-reinforcing. When the ablest cohort concentrates in one profession, that profession’s prestige rises further, while the fields being drained — semiconductor engineering, materials science, basic research — find it harder to show young people careers worth envying. Industry associations have warned repeatedly about the difficulty of staffing chip and battery research as experienced engineers age, and universities report weakening applications to graduate programmes in core science and engineering fields.
The government’s attempt to expand medical school quotas — held near 3,000 places a year for about two decades before an increase was pushed in 2024 — collided with fierce resistance from the medical profession and became one of the country’s most bitter policy disputes, precisely because the licence’s scarcity underwrites its value. Whatever the final settlement of that conflict, quota arithmetic alone does not change the underlying comparison between a protected profession and an exposed one.
The deeper lever, economists argue, sits on the other side: making technical careers worth staying in. That means later retirement in practice rather than policy, compensation that tracks the value senior engineers create, and research careers stable enough to survive funding cycles. Some conglomerates have moved — contract professorships for retired engineers, fellowships that pay research staff like executives — but the changes are young against a preference that families have watched harden over a generation.
Talent allocation is a slow variable; its effects surface a decade after the choices are made. Korea’s technology-dependent economy is, in that sense, running an experiment on itself: how long a country can lead in engineering while its most capable eighteen-year-olds are advised, by every rational signal around them, to become doctors instead.
