What short-form video actually did to teenage attention
Vertical clips now dominate the media day of Korean teenagers, and the popular explanation of what that does to their brains runs well ahead of the evidence.

Among Korean teenagers, the vertical clip has become the default unit of media. Surveys of adolescent media use by the Korea Press Foundation have found near-universal YouTube use in this age group for several years, and by the 2022 round short-form formats had moved from a novelty to a daily habit for a clear majority. Broadcasting-regulator surveys of household media behaviour show the same shift in the aggregate: time that once went to television and then to long-form online video has been redistributed toward feeds of clips lasting under a minute. The three services that carry most of it, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok, converged on almost identical designs within about two years of each other.
The design is the interesting part. A short-form feed differs from earlier video not mainly in length but in who chooses. In a conventional catalogue the user selects a title and the platform serves it. In a short-form feed the platform selects, the user’s only inputs are to keep watching or to swipe, and every swipe is a labelled training example. Because the clips are short, the system collects an unusually dense stream of feedback per hour, which makes its recommendations converge quickly. Because there is no end of an episode, there is no natural stopping point either. The economics are straightforward: attention time is inventory, ad load scales with session length, and a format that removes stopping cues produces more of both.
Whether this rewires adolescent brains is a separate question, and the Korean discourse tends to answer it faster than the research allows. The phrase popcorn brain, coined by an American researcher in 2011 to describe minds accustomed to constant stimulation finding ordinary pace intolerable, is a useful metaphor rather than a finding. The published literature on short-form video and attention is dominated by cross-sectional self-report studies, which can show that heavy users report more difficulty sustaining attention but cannot say which direction the arrow runs. Adolescents who already struggle with sustained attention have obvious reasons to prefer a format that never demands it. Longitudinal and experimental work is thinner, smaller and less consistent, and the effect sizes reported are generally modest.
There are findings that hold up better. Displacement is measurable and does not require any neurological claim: hours spent in a feed are hours not spent sleeping, reading, exercising or in unstructured company, and the sleep result in particular is well replicated. Late-night use and short sleep duration together predict a great deal of what gets attributed directly to the format. The honest summary is that the strongest evidence concerns what short-form video crowds out, not what it does to the tissue.
School policy abroad has moved without waiting for that evidence to settle. France restricted phones in lower secondary schools from 2018, the Netherlands introduced classroom restrictions at national scale, and UNESCO’s 2023 global education monitoring report recommended limiting smartphone use in schools, citing distraction and its effect on learning. Early evaluations of these measures are mixed and mostly weak in design. What they demonstrably do is remove the device from the one setting where sustained attention is explicitly the task, which is a narrower claim than the headlines around them.
For Korean schools and parents, the practical implications point away from the neurological framing. Nothing in the evidence supports treating short-form video as a toxin, and the moral-panic register has a poor record with this age group in any case. What the evidence does support is unremarkable and specific: protect sleep, protect the school day, and be honest that the format is engineered by people whose revenue depends on the swipe continuing. A teenager told that clips are melting their brain will discount the claim, correctly. A teenager shown how the recommendation loop is trained on their own swipes tends to find that more interesting, and it happens to be true.
